Social Networking with Ning

Both TechCrunch and GigaOm wrote about start-up company Ning yesterday. Ning is platform that allows anyone, including novices to build social applications. Apparently after their relaunch it is getting good reviews. Has anyone tried using them for their church or a group within their church?

Recently I have been thinking about the need for a social networking site for our coptic orthodox church. I mean we have coptic forums, coptic emails, coptic paltalk rooms… why not a coptic site like facebook (myspace,hi5,bebo,etc.). I really think there is a need out there first of all… so youth will get involved in it. And secondly I think we can use it as a tool for our youth meetings and other church activities.
Whats your opinions?
Agreed, the trick is how to do it right – we are currently trying to leverage Facebook instead of reinventing the wheel, also the CopticWortld.org project has a lot of potential in this area.
One of the things we are going to try to do in the new version of stmarkdc.org is adding community blogging, if it is successful, we may try to add additional features.
