ActiveSyncFor the past couple of years we have been using Good Mobile Messaging for connecting our Palm Treo phones back to Microsoft Exchange. Overall, Good has been a reliable and powerful solution but they are changing their pricing structure and costs will be way too high for us to continue with them. I began looking for other solutions and found that our Palm Treo 650 and 700p now support push email and contact/calendar via ActiveSync (note: direct push support requires Exhange 2003 SP2 or newer). We had previously configured RPC over HTTPS for remote Outlook connectivity, but when I tried to get my phone to connect I was having certificate issues. Turns out that the Palm only recognizes known certification authorites (which my internal certification authority is not), so we went ahead and purchased a SSL Certificate from GoDaddy.com. With the new certificate I was able to connect easily.

I wiped Good Mobile Messaging off of my phone and started running soley with ActiveSync. So far it is working pretty smoothly, there is no memo or tasks sync, but I don’t use those much. I also miss the access to other folders in my email, ActiveSync only shows the inbox. Overall, it isn’t perfect, but considering that there is no extra cost involved, I think we can live with it versus shelling out the big bucks for Good.

BusinessWeekI was quoted in BusinessWeek’s article on SunRocket – Line Goes Dead for a Web Caller.

Om Malik recommends porting your number to a mobile service as the best way to save your number.

Instructions on unlocking SunRocket’s gizmo so that you can use it with another provider.

My Gmail account was inaccessible for about 45 minutes today. Most of my colleagues and friends still had access so it may have been an isolated issue.

LingoTaking advice from Om Malik and a former SunRocket employee, I moved quickly and signed up for service with Lingo, requesting that they transfer my phone number from SunRocket (sounds like they should be able to port the number over). I went with Lingo’s $14.95/mo with 500 long distance minutes, they also have a $21.95/mo all you can eat plan. I chose Lingo because they are backed by Primus, an established player in the telecom field, and they come highly recommended from a few friends.  If you are interested, contact me, and I’ll refer you (we both get a $25 credit).

SunRocketLooks like SunRocket, my VoIP phone provider at home, may have bit the dust. I lost dialtone around 8pm last night, but I was able to login to the member area and forward my calls to another number. SunRocket isn’t reachable by phone and they have not released anything official. The New York Times says that SunRocket is moving its customers to one or more other companies. While I did prepay for two years of service, I am not as concern about losing the money as I am about keeping my phone number. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.

We have five great entries for the Coolest Prayer Space Contest. Let us know which one you think is the coolest. Voting closes at midnight (EST).

Saints Peter and Paul Today, we conclude the Apostles Fast and celebrate the Apostles’ Feast, where we commemorate the martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul.

From Saint Clement of Rome:

“Let us set before our eyes the illustrious apostles. [Saint] Peter, through unrighteous envy, endured not one or two, but numerous labors; and when had at length suffered martyrdom, departed to the place of glory due to him.

“…[Saint] Paul also obtained the reward of patient endurance, after being seven times thrown into captivity, compelled to flee, and stoned. After preaching both in the east and west, he gained the illustrious reputation due to his faith, having taught righteousness to the whole world, and come to the extreme limit of the west, and suffered martyrdom under the prefects. Thus he was removed from the world and went into the holy place, having proved himself a striking example of patience.”
